Vessels:
Lautan Megah
A suitable vessel has been identified and donors have provided funds to purchase and support on-going costs.
KM Batavia (now off-hire)
An 800 ton, 66-meter ex Hong Kong passenger ferry capable of carrying up to 50 volunteers, 150 tons or 1,000m3 of aid and could steam at 11 knots to the most critical areas. Port and starboard loading doors dropped down to form landings or were dropped lower to launch boats. The lower deck is protected from the weather for secure dry stowage of aid material, equipment and tools.
The 50m x 10m open plan air conditioned passenger deck serves at times as a floating field medical dispensery, cargo overflow and sleeping quarters for volunteers. The 50m x 10m open plan 3rd deck also serves as a dining area, medical pharmacy and logistics area. The 4th deck houses the coordination and communication center. The fuel capacity of the vessel was 38 tons and at 13 knots fuel consumption was 450 ltr/ht. At anchor, the fuel consumption dropped to 30 ltrs/hr. The passenger ferry configuration kept cargo segregated, secure and dry allowing easy sorting and access to specific supplies that were needed at each new location.
The charter rate for BATAVIA was US$2,500 per day plus food, water, fuel, port charges and loading costs. This rate is in line with other vessels currently in service in Aceh and Nias. (Maruta Jaya running cost + charter fees = $3,000/day)

Electric Lamb
Built by Rick over an 8 year period and launched in 1981, this timber yacht is a veteran of well over 200,000 sea miles in Indonesian waters. Electric Lamb was the first surf charter boat to operate full time in the Mentawai Islands commencing in May 1993.
Electric Lamb was the first relief boat to reach the SW coast of Aceh. She completed a 10 day AUS AID sponsored mission but was damaged when she hit a suberged log on her way to Simeulue. AUS AID discontinued support when we reported the damage but the work was so urgent that Rick decided to trust Captain Pili's judgement and continue operating.
EL returned to the sheltered waters of the Banyak Islands where temporary repairs were carried out by Captain Pili and the crew. The repairs held and EL stayed on station in the Banyaks assisting village communities with the retrieval and disposal of bodies funded by ELM.
EL is now fully servicable again and available for donor funded on going aid work at a US$450* per day. This rate reflects the actual cost of operating the vessel in Indonesian waters. (Commercial charter rates for Electric Lamb are in the range of $900 to $1,100 per day)
*subject to change in line with costs.
KM Sembilan (now off-hire)
This twin engine 70ft charter boat was used on a 10 day mission to Pulau Banyaks and Simeulue funded by Aus Aid commencing on 1st of January. Medis Sans Frontiers (Doctors without Frontiers) then chartered Sembilan for 14 days to survey Simeulue Island. Sembilan is available for charter for future work at $900 per day plus fuel and food.

Our fleet of 4 fast beach landing boats are state of the art double skin molded PE utility craft with a capacity of up to 1.25mtons in calm conditions. Powered by 40 hp outboards and equipped with anchors and radios, we can achieve unloading rates of up to 40 tons per day if conditions allow.
• 4 x 6.2m PE moulded beach landing skiffs - 1.2ton capacity
• 6 x 40 hp outboard engines
• 4 x VHF marine band hand held radios
Land Based:
Padang Headquarters
Mission headquarters were established days after the tsunami in Jane & Rick's hilltop residence in Padang, West Sumatra. Operations command & control moved to the Batavia 23rd January and then resumed in Padang on 11th May.
The property is very private and secured by fences and a large guard dog and security staff night and day. Facilites includes the following:
• 120m2 Main residence with office and dining area.
• 70m2 Guest residence capable of sleeping up to 10 volunteers
• 60m2 Studio area (could be converted into office space in an emergency)
• 60m2 Managers residence and store (husband and wife team manage the property)
• 10m2 Workshop guard house (can be used as a radio room)
• 70m2 Garage/store (currently used for storage of relief supplies and equipment)
• 15m2 Washing area and store
• 20m2 Workshop for construction

Buildings are all new and have been constructed to withstand earthquakes. The site is at 275m elevation with road access that would not be effected by a tsunami. The elevation keeps the buildings cool and there is no need for airconditioning reducing the need for power.
At this time the facilities & space are provided to ELM free of charge. Food, staffing and running costs will be funded by ELM donations.
Pulau Raya POSKO
To continue support for the Pulau Raya and Lho Kruet communities, it is essential to establish a land base with sleeping quarters and communications. Once we have this building in place, we plan to station one or perhaps two of our PE beach landing boats in the area to transport materials from the mainland to the island.
If possible the building should be designed as a prototype to test construction methods for long term housing needs in the area. The design we have selected is based on the Lysaght metal frame prototype that our team inspected in Medan. This kit form building is precut in the factory and trucked to site for rapid assembly.
Vehicles:
ELM & UV have access to 2 x Toyota Hard Top 4x4 long wheel base vans in Padang.
• One renovated fully (1979)
• One mechanically sound (1981)
Each can seat up to 8 persons and capable of off-road use. A local driver is always available and the cars may not be driven by volunteers.
Trailer (current) 1 x box type - one ton capacity.
